Vermont Watercolor Workshops
Workshop dates:
Join us for one or both of these 3-night/4-day watercolor workshops.
September 27 to 30, 2020 with Lynn Zimmerman; and
September 30 to October 3, 2020 with Tony van Hasselt, A.W.S.
Location:
Lake Willoughby, Vermont during fall foliage season
This fall we are coordinating two, back-to-back workshops in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. Be our guest at either of these workshops, or if you like, join us for both.
And the best part is that they will be during fall foliage season when you can watch the Vermont countryside come alive in full color.
Traveling isn’t easy during this time of Covid-19. Many of us would have preferred to be painting in Europe. But what better place to be during these times than Vermont, and there is no place prettier than Lake Willoughby in a quiet corner of the state. (Read more below about how we’ve changed our workshops in light of Covid-19.)
Lake Willoughby, in the town or Westmore, VT, offers a pleasing mix of water, steep hillsides, farm fields and woodland. To take advantage of this all, we will be located lake-side in rustic wood cabins which will allow you to sit on your front porch and paint. And when you are not painting, you can enjoy the lake’s tranquility, read a book, or even rent a kayak.
Dates:
September 27 to 30, 2020 with Lynn Zimmerman; and
September 30 to October 3, 2020 with Tony van Hasselt, A.W.S.
Cost: $700 (for 4 days and 3 nights). See below if you would like to join both workshops.
Covid-19 Considerations
Obviously, travel is different now than before. So, we’ve made some adjustments to how these two workshops are organized:
You will travel to the workshop site in your own vehicle and use your own vehicle to travel to painting sites during the workshop.
Rather than go to restaurants, we have arranged cabins with kitchens so that you can cook your own food and eat in your own cabin (or on the cabin’s porch). One dinner per workshop will be together, but in a private room.
Naturally, we’ll be practicing social distancing and we ask that you always wear a mask when close to other people.
And finally, we’ve changed our cancellation policy. You may cancel at any time and receive a full refund up to September 17, 2020.

Workshop Instructor:
Tony van Hasselt, A.W.S.
A resident of Maine, Tony has been elected to signature membership of the American Watercolor Society and for decades has organized and taught watercolor workshops throughout the US, Mexico and abroad.
Tony is a plein air painter who enjoys sharing his experience with students. His aim is to teach in a sequential manner, building on what has already been presented. Although drawing ability comes first, the focus is on the art of picture making, composition and design. These are skills applicable in any medium. He also encourages sketchbook journaling to create memories of an area, often using such sketches as preparation for larger efforts.
Tony has written and co-authored three books on watercolor and produced several how-to DVD presentations.

Workshop Instructor:
Lynn Zimmerman
Instructor, River Gallery School
Lynn finds great joy in helping her students explore and discover their artistic abilities. Her love of painting and drawing comes through as she helps her students understand how to see, how to use color, how light and shadows create forms, and how to translate all these elements into paintings. The technical aspects of painting and drawing are an important part of her instruction, but always with the goal of helping her students create the pictures they want to create.
Whether the subject matter is a hillside vineyard or a plate of cheese, Lynn helps her students see the paintings they want to make, and make the paintings they want to see. Currently, she teaches watercolor painting and book arts at River Gallery School in Brattleboro, VT. Lynn is a resident of New Hampshire.

About the workshops
Demonstrations will be in watercolor but students using acrylics or pastels are welcome. Studio painters might consider this workshop as an introduction to working on location, while finishing touches can be added later in the comfort of your studio.
Weather permitting, the daily schedule for each of the workshops is to start with a plein air lecture-demonstration. After some on-location advice, students are free to select a subject and paint on their own, while the instructor assists on an individual basis. The instructors consider themselves more of a coach or mentor than an instructor. After all, there are many ways to approach a subject and the enjoyment is in exploring your own style and direction.
You will arrive at our cabins on day 1 of the workshop, get settled in and explore some painting locations before dinner. On days 2 and 3, there will be instruction both in the morning and the afternoon. And on day 4, there will be further instruction in the morning. As always with our workshops, there will be a celebration dinner art show with the work we’ve created. This will take place in the evening of Day 3.
